Local Landmark: 134-Year-Old Pelton Mansion in Illinois Hits

For only the second time in 134 years, the historic Pelton Mansion in Elgin, IL, is on the market. The 4,628-square-foot Victorian home was listed earlier this month for $650,000.

The place was built in 1889 for renowned local surgeon Ora Levant Pelton and his family. Pelton practiced medicine for more than 63 years, making him one of the longest-working physicians in the region.

The Pelton Mansion is registered with the National Historic Society and has been included in numerous local history tours over the years.

Custom craftsmanship

Located at 214 S State Street, the eight-bedroom mansion is part of a corridor once known as “rich man’s row.” It was built in “stick” style, with decorative wood details by architect Gilbert M. Turnbull.

Victorian-era design details are apparent in the sculptured chimneys, tower, and ornamental spindles.

Much of the 4,628-square-foot home’s original footprint remains intact, and the interior features an array of custom woodwork and craftsmanship.

The sprawling space includes three full bathrooms, two half-baths, and three fireplaces, along with period elements such as vintage wallpaper and a coffered ceiling.

The dining room’s pocket doors open to a solarium, and the kitchen comes with a retro stove and fridge. An office with built-ins and a reception parlor are among other highlights.

Soaring ceilings, a grand rounded staircase, and numerous original light fixtures also lend the impression of an untouched Victorian mansion.

Set on a.39-acre lot, the property comes with an original carriage house, which can comfortably fit up to six cars and has an unfinished second level “awaiting your creative touches.”
