It might look like something from the Disney universe, but the castle at 580 Brickyard Road is actually a private residence that’s on the market again—for the princely sum of $26,000,000.
The 18,000-square-foot castle, also known as Chris Mark Castle, was built in 2010—with royalty in mind, obviously.
But whether the Woodstock, CT, chateau actually finds its next ruler, remains to be seen.
After all, this isn’t the first time the unique property has been listed. It’s been on and off the market since 2014, four years after a lengthy construction project there was completed.
Chateau’s saga
The castle’s owner bought the 75-acre lot for $167,500 in 2003 and completed the grandiose abode seven years later.
The regal real estate was first listed in 2014 for $45 million. Still on the market for the same amount in 2015, the eye-popping property ranked as one of the most viewed homes on Realtor.com®.
But that popularity did not translate into a sale, and the stately dwelling returned to the market more recently in 2021 for $35 million.
But then the ask jumped in 2022 to a high of $60 million, before the listing was removed.
And now, the chateau is again up for grabs. Most recently, the 2010 build became one of the most expensive homes on the market when it hit the market in early August—at the greatly reduced $26 million listing price.
The property is being listed by its original owner, Christopher Mark, a descendant of steel tycoon Clayton Mark.
According to the castle’s website (which was recently taken down), the home was built for Christopher Mark’s two daughters, who dreamed of being princesses. Several sculptures around the home’s interior were even modeled after the girls’ faces.
And the cavernous castle certainly includes some storybook standards—please see: the massive moat and looming, 126-foot-tall towers.
Inside, custom woodwork made from 25 species of hardwood is found across nine bedrooms and multiple fireplace-laden communal spaces.
The walkout lower level includes a circular bar.
A large kitchen, auditorium, and seven full bathrooms also await, as does an additional outdoor building that once housed exotic animals. The woodsy land includes a 30-acre pond.
The buyer will also be offered first dibs on an additional 325 acres.
